A stained concrete patio is an existing outdoor concrete slab that’s been treated with an acid-based or water-based stain to permanently change its color. The stain soaks into the concrete surface, creating rich, translucent tones that won’t peel, chip, or flake like paint or a coating.

Staining is different from coating. Epoxy patio coatings sit on top of the concrete as a protective layer. Staining penetrates into the slab and becomes part of it. If you want color that looks natural and organic rather than a uniform coating, staining is the better choice for outdoor spaces.

At Austin Innovative Concrete, stained patios are one of our most popular outdoor projects as part of our stained concrete services. We also offer stained concrete floors for interior spaces.

Where We Stain Outdoor Concrete in Austin

Concrete staining works on any flat outdoor slab that’s in reasonable condition. Here’s where we install stained patios most often:

  • Backyard patios and entertaining areas
  • Pool decks and surrounds
  • Front porches and covered entryways
  • Driveways and walkways
  • Outdoor kitchen and dining areas
  • Commercial outdoor seating (restaurants, cafes, bars)

If your patio slab has cracks, spalling, or other surface damage, we’ll handle concrete restoration first. If the surface is too damaged for staining, a decorative overlay can provide a fresh base to stain over.

Why Stained Patios Work in Austin's Climate

Austin’s outdoor conditions are demanding: summer temperatures above 100 degrees, intense UV year-round, and sudden heavy downpours. Stained concrete handles all of that when properly sealed.

  • UV-stable stains that resist fading in direct sunlight
  • The stain is inside the concrete, not on top, so it can’t peel or blister from heat
  • Sealed surfaces repel water, preventing moisture from soaking into the slab
  • Easy to clean: hose off or sweep as needed
  • Resealing every 1 to 2 years keeps the color vibrant and the surface protected
  • Available in earthy, natural tones (acid stains) or bold, custom colors (water-based dyes)

Staining Methods for Outdoor Patios

Acid-Based Stains. React chemically with the minerals in your concrete to produce warm, variegated earth tones. Colors include ambers, browns, terra cottas, blue-greens, and charcoals. The result is organic and slightly varied, similar to natural stone. This is the most popular option for Austin patios because it blends with outdoor landscaping.

Water-Based Stains (Dyes). Penetrate the concrete without a chemical reaction, producing more uniform, consistent color. Available in a wider range of colors including blues, reds, greens, and custom shades. Good for patios where you want a specific color match to your home exterior or outdoor furniture.

Both types are sealed with a UV-stable, weather-resistant outdoor sealer. We can layer multiple stain colors or combine acid and water-based techniques for custom patterns, borders, and transitions.

Our Patio Staining Process

  1. Free On-Site Estimate. We inspect the patio slab, discuss color options, and provide transparent pricing. We bring stain samples so you can see how colors look on your actual concrete in natural outdoor light.
  2. Surface Prep. We clean, grind, or strip the slab to remove dirt, old sealers, and surface contaminants. Cracks and chips are repaired. The surface must be clean and porous for the stain to absorb evenly.
  3. Stain Application. The acid stain or water-based dye is applied in one or more coats. For multi-color designs, we use masking, scoring, or hand techniques to create patterns or borders.
  4. Neutralize and Clean (Acid Stain Only). After the acid reacts with the concrete, we neutralize, rinse, and dry the surface.
  5. Outdoor Sealer. A UV-stable, weather-resistant clear sealer is applied to lock in the color and protect against moisture, sun, and foot traffic. You choose the sheen: matte, satin, or gloss.
  6. Walkthrough. We review the finished patio with you and provide care instructions. Most patio staining projects are completed in 1 to 2 days.

Stained Patios vs Other Outdoor Finishes

Staining vs epoxy. Epoxy patio coatings sit on top of the concrete as a protective resin layer. Staining penetrates into the slab. Epoxy offers more chemical resistance and a uniform, seamless finish. Staining creates a more natural, organic look with color depth that shows the concrete’s character.

Staining vs overlays. Decorative overlays add a new material layer that can be stamped to look like stone, brick, or tile. Staining works with the concrete you already have. If your slab is in good shape, staining is faster and less expensive. If the surface is too damaged, an overlay gives you a fresh canvas.

Staining vs pavers. Pavers require a full excavation and base installation. Staining uses your existing slab. No demolition, no base work, no joints to weed. Stained concrete is faster to install, lower cost, and has no grout or joint maintenance.

We’ll help you compare options during your free estimate and recommend the finish that makes the most sense for your patio.

Frequently Asked Questions

The stain itself is permanent. It penetrates into the concrete and won’t peel, chip, or flake. The sealer on top needs to be reapplied every 1 to 2 years for outdoor surfaces in Austin because UV and weather break down sealers faster than indoor conditions.

Minor surface cracks can be repaired during prep and stained over successfully. If the slab has deep structural cracks or active settling, we may recommend concrete restoration first. We assess this during the free estimate.

Acid stains produce earthy tones: ambers, browns, terra cottas, blue-greens, and charcoals. Water-based dyes offer a wider range including custom colors. We bring samples to your property so you can see how colors look on your actual concrete in natural light.

Stained concrete with a standard sealer has a similar texture to any sealed outdoor surface. For pool decks and areas that get wet frequently, we can add an anti-slip additive to the sealer for extra traction.

Most residential patio projects are completed in 1 to 2 days including surface prep, staining, and sealing. The sealer needs 24 to 48 hours to cure before regular use.

Paint sits on the surface and will peel, chip, and flake over time, especially outdoors. Stain penetrates into the concrete and becomes part of it. Stained concrete doesn’t peel and maintains its color far longer than paint.
