Stained concrete floors use acid-based or water-based stains to permanently change the color of an existing concrete slab. The stain penetrates into the surface, so the color won’t peel, chip, or wear off like paint or a coating. The result is a rich, translucent finish that shows the natural character of the concrete underneath.

At Austin Innovative Concrete, stained floors are one of our most popular services as part of our stained concrete offerings. We handle everything from surface prep through final sealing, and we work exclusively with existing concrete. No new pours.

Residential Stained Concrete Floors

Stained concrete is a practical choice for Austin homeowners who want a durable, low-maintenance floor with real visual warmth. It works especially well in open-concept layouts where the floor runs continuously across multiple rooms.

Where we install stained floors in homes:

  • Living rooms and great rooms
  • Kitchens and dining areas
  • Hallways and entryways
  • Basements and sunrooms
  • Home offices and studios
  • Laundry rooms and mudrooms

Stained concrete is also a smart choice for allergy-prone households. Unlike carpet, it doesn’t trap dust, pet dander, or pollen. A quick sweep or damp mop keeps the surface clean.

Acid stains produce earthy, variegated tones that give the floor an organic, natural-stone look. Water-based dyes offer a broader color palette with more uniform coverage. We’ll help you choose during your free estimate.

Commercial Stained Concrete Floors

Stained concrete handles heavy foot traffic, is easy to clean, and gives commercial spaces a polished, professional appearance without the cost and upkeep of tile or hardwood.

Where we install stained floors in commercial settings:

  • Retail stores and showrooms
  • Restaurants and cafes
  • Office lobbies and open workspaces
  • Salons and spas
  • Medical and dental clinics
  • Schools and civic buildings

Maintenance is minimal. Sweep daily, damp mop as needed, and reseal every 2 to 4 years depending on traffic. No waxing, no stripping, no special cleaners.

Stained Concrete Floors vs Other Flooring

Stained concrete vs tile. No grout lines to clean or replace. Won’t crack from impact. Stained concrete provides a continuous surface that’s easier to maintain long-term.

Stained concrete vs hardwood. Won’t scratch, warp, or swell from moisture. Handles water and spills without damage. Lower installation and lifetime maintenance costs.

Stained concrete vs carpet. Doesn’t trap allergens, pet hair, or odors. Won’t stain from spills. Lasts 15 to 20+ years instead of 5 to 10. Far easier to clean.

Stained concrete vs polished concrete. Staining adds color. Polished concrete floors add sheen and reflectivity. You can combine both: stain for color, then polish for gloss. Staining alone is typically less expensive.

Stained concrete vs epoxy. Epoxy coats the concrete with a resin layer. Staining penetrates the surface. Epoxy is better for chemical resistance (garages, workshops). Staining is better for a natural, translucent color effect (living spaces, restaurants).

Our Floor Staining Process

  1. Free Estimate. We inspect your slab, discuss color and finish options, and provide transparent pricing. We bring stain samples so you can see colors on your actual concrete.
  2. Surface Prep. We clean, grind, or strip the floor to remove old sealers, coatings, adhesives, and surface contaminants. Cracks and chips are repaired. If the slab needs more than surface repair, we’ll recommend concrete restoration first.
  3. Stain Application. The acid stain or water-based dye is applied in one or more coats. For multi-color designs, we use masking, scoring, or hand techniques to create patterns, borders, or transitions.
  4. Neutralize and Clean (Acid Stain Only). After the acid reacts with the concrete, we neutralize, rinse, and dry the surface completely.
  5. Seal and Protect. A clear sealer is applied to lock in the color and add sheen (matte, satin, or gloss). Indoor floors get a standard sealer. High-traffic commercial floors get a heavier-duty option.
  6. Walkthrough. We review the finished floor with you and provide care instructions. Most floor staining projects are completed in 1 to 2 days.

Frequently Asked Questions

The stain itself is permanent. It penetrates the concrete and won’t peel or fade under normal conditions. The sealer on top needs reapplication every 2 to 4 years depending on traffic. With basic maintenance, stained floors last the life of the building.

Sealed stained concrete has a similar coefficient of friction to tile or sealed hardwood. It’s not inherently slippery. For areas prone to water (kitchens, entryways), we can apply an anti-slip additive to the sealer.

It depends on the condition. If the old finish can be stripped or ground off, we can re-stain the floor. If not, we may recommend a concrete overlay as a fresh base. We assess this during the free estimate.

Acid stains produce earthy tones: ambers, browns, terra cottas, blue-greens, and charcoals. Water-based dyes offer a much wider range including bold blues, reds, greens, and custom colors. We can also layer colors and create patterns.

Yes. Staining adds color, polishing adds sheen. You can stain a floor first for color, then polish it for a smooth, reflective finish. We offer both services and often combine them.

Most residential projects are completed in 1 to 2 days including prep, staining, and sealing. Commercial floors may take 2 to 3 days depending on square footage and design complexity.
