Stained concrete is the process of applying a chemical or dye-based stain directly to an existing concrete slab to permanently change its color. The stain penetrates into the concrete surface rather than sitting on top, which means it won’t peel, chip, or flake like paint or a coating.

The result is a rich, translucent color that shows the natural variation of the concrete beneath. Each slab reacts slightly differently, so every stained floor is unique.

At Austin Innovative Concrete, concrete staining is one of our most requested decorative concrete services. We handle every step from surface prep through final sealing, and we specialize in refinishing existing concrete, not pouring new slabs.

Our Concrete Staining Methods

We use two types of concrete stains depending on the look you want and the condition of your slab:

Acid-Based Stains. These react chemically with the minerals in the concrete to produce rich, variegated, earthy tones. The results are organic and slightly unpredictable, which is part of the appeal. Colors tend toward ambers, browns, terra cottas, and blue-greens. Acid stains work well on older concrete slabs that have character and variation.

Water-Based Stains (Dyes). These penetrate the concrete without a chemical reaction, which means more consistent, uniform color. Available in a much wider range of colors, including bold tones that acid stains can’t achieve. Water-based dyes work well on new or well-maintained concrete where you want a clean, even finish.

Both types are permanent, UV-stable, and can be combined with a clear sealer for added protection and sheen. We can also layer multiple stain colors or combine acid and water-based techniques for custom effects.

Where We Stain Concrete in Austin

Concrete staining works on both interior and exterior surfaces. Here’s where we install it most often:

Residential Floors. Living rooms, kitchens, hallways, basements, and sunrooms.
Stained concrete floors are one of the most popular interior upgrades in Austin because they combine color, durability, and easy maintenance.

Outdoor Patios and Pool Decks.
Stained concrete patios transform plain gray outdoor slabs into warm, colorful surfaces that hold up to Austin’s heat and UV exposure. We use UV-stable stains and outdoor-rated sealers on all exterior projects.

Commercial Spaces. Retail stores, restaurants, offices, salons, and lobbies. Stained concrete handles heavy foot traffic and gives commercial spaces a polished, professional appearance without the cost of tile or hardwood.

If your slab has existing damage, we’ll handle concrete restoration first. If the surface needs a full resurfacing layer before staining, decorative overlays can provide a fresh base to stain over.

Our Concrete Staining Process

  1. Free On-Site Estimate. We inspect the slab, discuss your color and finish preferences, and provide transparent pricing. We bring stain samples so you can see actual colors on a test area of your concrete.
  2. Surface Preparation. We clean, grind, or strip the slab to remove old sealers, coatings, adhesives, and surface contaminants. Cracks and chips are repaired. Proper prep is critical for even stain absorption.
  3. Stain Application. The acid stain or water-based dye is applied in one or more coats. For multi-color designs, we use masking, scoring, or hand techniques to create patterns, borders, or color transitions.
  4. Neutralize and Clean (Acid Stain Only). After the acid stain reacts with the concrete, we neutralize the surface, rinse thoroughly, and allow it to dry before sealing.
  5. Seal and Protect. A clear sealer is applied to lock in the color, add sheen (matte, satin, or gloss), and protect the surface from moisture and wear. Outdoor surfaces get a UV-stable, weather-resistant sealer.
  6. Final Walkthrough. We review the completed project with you and provide care instructions. Most staining projects are completed in 1 to 2 days.

Stained Concrete vs Other Finishes

Staining vs Polishing. Staining adds color by penetrating the slab.
Polished concrete adds sheen and reflectivity by grinding the surface smooth. They’re complementary: you can stain a floor first, then polish it for both color and gloss. Staining alone is typically less expensive and faster to install.

Staining vs Epoxy.
Epoxy coats the concrete with a resin layer. Staining penetrates the surface and becomes part of the concrete. Epoxy offers more chemical resistance and solid color options. Staining creates a more natural, organic look with translucent color depth.

Staining vs Overlays.
Decorative overlays add a new material layer that can be stamped or textured. Staining works with the concrete you already have. If your slab is in good condition, staining is faster and less expensive. If the surface is too damaged for staining, an overlay gives you a fresh canvas.

Caring for Your Stained Concrete

Stained concrete is low-maintenance, but Austin’s climate (intense UV, heat, and occasional heavy rain) means outdoor surfaces need a bit more attention than indoor ones.

  • Indoor floors: Sweep or dust mop regularly. Wet mop with a neutral pH cleaner. Avoid acidic or ammonia-based products. Reseal every 2 to 4 years depending on traffic.
  • Outdoor surfaces: Rinse with a hose as needed. Reseal every 1 to 2 years to maintain UV protection and color vibrancy. Austin sun breaks down sealers faster than indoor conditions.
  • All surfaces: Clean spills promptly. Use mats at entryways to reduce tracked-in grit. Avoid dragging heavy furniture directly across the surface.

Frequently Asked Questions

Stained concrete is permanent. The color penetrates into the surface and won’t peel, chip, or fade under normal conditions. The sealer on top needs to be reapplied every 1 to 4 years depending on traffic and sun exposure, but the stain itself doesn’t wear off.

Acid stains react chemically with the concrete to produce natural, variegated earth tones. Water-based stains (dyes) penetrate without a reaction, producing more uniform color in a wider range of shades. Acid stains give a more organic look. Water-based dyes give a more controlled, consistent look.

Yes. We stain patios, pool decks, walkways, and driveways. We use UV-stable stains and outdoor-rated sealers that handle Austin’s heat and sun. Outdoor sealers need to be reapplied more frequently (every 1 to 2 years) than indoor sealers.

It depends on the condition. If the old stain or sealer can be stripped or ground off, we can re-stain the surface. If not, we may recommend an overlay or a different decorative finish. We assess this during the free estimate.

Most residential staining projects are completed in 1 to 2 days. This includes surface prep, stain application, and sealing. Larger commercial projects may take 2 to 3 days.

Yes. Staining adds color, polishing adds sheen. You can stain a floor first to get the color you want, then polish it for a smooth, reflective finish. We offer both services and often combine them on the same project.
